When we are talking about what facial mask bags need to be made of, you gotta think about the stuff that’s actually in the mask and what we want the packaging to do. Face masks usually have water, serum, and other active ingredients, so the main job of the bag is to keep all that good stuff protected, make the mask last longer, and make sure it’s easy for people to use. Here are some of the main things the material needs to be able to do:
1. Keeping Stuff Out:
This is super important for mask bags. All those good ingredients in the mask can go bad or lose their oomph if they are exposed to the outside world. So, the material of the bag has to be really good at blocking:
Water Vapor: We don’t want the water and serum in the mask to dry out, so the bag needs to keep moisture in.
Oxygen: Oxygen can make the mask ingredients break down and go bad, so the bag needs to keep it out.
Light: Especially UV light, which can mess with some of the active ingredients. So, the material needs to block light.
Smells: We don’t want the mask to lose its own nice smell, and we definitely don’t want it to pick up any weird smells from outside.
Some of the common materials that are good at blocking things are:
Aluminum Foil: This stuff is awesome at blocking water, oxygen, and light. It’s often used as the inside or middle layer of mask bags. Pure aluminum foil is even better at blocking than the metallized stuff.
Metallized PET: This is a PET film that’s got a super thin layer of aluminum on it. It’s pretty good at blocking stuff and doesn’t cost as much as pure aluminum foil.
Nylon: This is good at blocking gases and is often mixed with other materials to make the bag even better.
PVDC Coating: This is a coating that goes on other materials and makes them way better at blocking water vapor and gases.
EVOH: This is really good at blocking gases, but it doesn’t like moisture, so it’s usually used with other materials.
2. Staying Sealed:
Mask bags need to seal really well when they are heated. This makes sure the mask doesn’t leak and no yucky stuff from the outside gets in. The inside layer of the bag is usually made of something that seals well with heat, like:
Polyethylene: This seals great with heat, doesn’t cost a lot, and is a common inside layer.
CPP: This also seals well with heat and is see-through.
3. Being Strong:
Mask bags have to be able to handle some pulling, tearing, and poking when they are being made, shipped, stored, and used. So, the material needs to be strong enough to not break easily. Some common outer layers are:
PET: This is strong, doesn’t scratch easily, and prints really well, so it’s often used for the outside to make the bags look nice.
BOPP: This is see-through, shiny, and prints great, so it’s also often used for the outside.
4. Being Clean and Safe:
Face masks go right on your skin, so the material of the bag has to meet food-grade or cosmetic-grade safety standards. It needs to be non-toxic and not mess with the mask ingredients.
5. Printing Well:
To make the product look good and show off the brand, the outer layer of the mask bag needs to print clearly and the printing needs to last. This way they can put cool designs, words, and barcodes on there.
6. Being Easy to Open:
To make it easy for people to use the mask, a lot of bags have a little tear notch. So, the material needs to tear somewhat easily but still tear cleanly without leaving jagged edges.
7. Not Costing a Fortune:
While making sure the bag does all the important stuff, the companies making the masks also have to think about how much the material costs and try to find the best combination of performance and price.
